If you simply pair the HRM, wear it, and track a run with the HRM and Epix, running power should work automatically with the default settings. Default is that the HRM does distance and pace indoors, and GPS/Epix does distance and pace outside. You can change that in the sensor settings on your watch, but you probably don't need to.
I have been working out with the HRM pro (yellow) for a while now. Batteries are good and strap is still in really good shape, its only 5 months used. I've been using Garmin's HRM straps for many years now, from swim, tri, pro, and standard HRM units. I've never had an issue with cold weather operation until this latest HRM pro strap.

After that to ALL of mine straps owned, two Hrm Run and now a Hrm Pro, has happened the same thing, I'm sure of that: after changing factory battery the strap drains all brand new battery that you put in in a few hours or days or little more but there's nothing to do, it's like they were short circuited on the strap, when you wear the first time all seems working then the battery get discharged.

I've had similar experiences with my FR 45. After using it for mobths, HR reading started jumping high during excercises, way above my HR max. I contacted Garmin support and tried everything they suggested, including factory reset. They finally sent me a chest strap to test with, which worked fine.
